A process server is an individual who delivers a variety of court documents to individuals who then are deemed to have notice of the need to appear in court or otherwise defend their interests. The process server must then certify to the court that the document has been served to the named party. Most commonly, a process server delivers a summons and complaint necessary to start a trial. Specific requirements vary by state law.
