This week, we’re featuring Jane Gekhman of JMG Legal PLLC. The law firm was founded by Jane in 2018 and is located in Frisco, Texas. Jane has been practicing law for over 10 years and focuses her practice on family and immigration law.

Jane is passionate about being more than just an attorney her clients come to, but a counselor at law. She takes the time to connect with her clients and help’s them with their specific needs. Practicing law for Jane means helping clients close chapters in their lives to allow for new opportunities to open.

At the age of 8, Jane moved from her native born country, Kiev, Ukraine to Dallas, Texas. Jane is fluent in Russian and received her Juris Doctor degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law. She has been recognized as a Super Lawyer for two consecutive years and awarded Avvo’s Clients’ Choice from 2018-2020.

What advice would you give to other lawyers?

Jane: Make sure to remember when to end the workday and not to carry over work home with you.

Pro Tip: PracticePanther understands the importance of mental health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Historically, seeking help for mental health was taboo and lawyers were forced to struggle in silence. As more attention is brought to the importance of mental health, more lawyers speaking out and addressing these issues. From meditation, taking more breaks or blocking their time, lawyers are adopting stress management techniques to help take back the balance in their day.

Looking back 5 years, what would you have told yourself?

Jane: You are doing great, keep going and don’t look back.

What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received as a lawyer?

Jane: We were told at graduation that now the real world begins and it is important to work all of the time. The individual told us he hadn’t taken a vacation for about 20 years. That is terrible because in my line of work, mental breaks are critical and necessary. In order to be able to practice law you have to give yourself breaks sometimes and have the ability to rest and reboot.

Jane: I started using PracticePanther in 2018 and use it every day. It helps me manage my calendar, billing, and important client information. My favorite thing about the software is that it is so easy to use. I’ve been able to stay more organized and track important deadlines to better assist my clients. To learn more about how PracticePanther can assist with managing your law firm, you can book a custom demo, here.
